Pedagogy Workshop

Pedagogy Workshop: Using Technology to Enhance International Business Teaching, Dec. 13-14, 2018

Presenter: P. Roberto Garcia Ph.D., Distinguished Clinical Professor of International Business, Indiana University, Kelley School of Business

Maximum Number of Participants: 30

Workshop Description and Target Audience:
The best classroom teaching is a combination of “learned skills” and “art-form.” This combination can make the abstract come alive. In this practical workshop, Roberto Garcia will provide a demonstration of four technologies he uses in order to enhance his teaching of international business. The tools covered in this session will be applicable in large lecture format courses as well as in small discussion- driven sections. This workshop should be of interest to faculty and doctoral students who teach international business or who are considering international business content in the future. This interactive workshop will emphasize the “learned skills” and the “art form” of effective teaching.

Thursday – 15.30-16.45“Incorporating Video Clips: An Engaging and Accessible Pedagogical Tool for International Business Teaching”
One of the challenges of teaching international business is the coverage of concepts that may seem abstract to students lacking real-world work experience. Incorporating short videos to supplement a traditional class lecture will make the following more accessible to students:

  • understanding and managing cultural differences,
  • understanding the decision-making process of the key protagonists in a business case by viewing recorded interviews,
  • experiencing the key issues in an international business situation or globalization debate,
  • viewing simplified explanations of complex cultural, political, economic, or societal trends, etc.

This session will illustrate several ways in which short videos may be used in a traditional lecture to make difficult concepts seem more relevant and engaging to students.

Friday – 16.00-17.00: Using ForClass™ to Drive Student Engagement and Accountability in International Business Courses”
A common teaching problem is how to motivate students to allocate quality preparation time necessary for engaging class discussions. ForClassTM is an LMS integrated app that captures, aggregates, and reports student preparation. In this interactive faculty presentation, Roberto Garcia will demonstrate his implementation of ForClassTM in both small and large international business courses. He will discuss his experience working with this new technology and will share his students’ feedback.

17.00-17.15 – coffee break

Friday – 17.15-18.30:  “Using Zoom™ and Globesmart™ to Enhance International Business Online Teaching”
Many universities are experimenting with the delivery of online instruction. A key challenge is how to bridge the physical distance between the instructor and class members and how to reduce the feelings of isolation experienced by students. Roberto Garcia has been teaching online MBA students for over 15 years and will demonstrate two technologies which make his online courses highly relevant and engaging. Zoom is a powerful web conferencing tool which allows the real-time delivery of course materials (PPT, Excel files, screen sharing, videos, etc.) while allowing students to connect via video and voice. Globesmart is an online resource that allows students to research business-related cultural information on almost 100 countries. This session will demonstrate Garcia’s approach to delivering online instruction and how to incorporate Zoom and GlobeSmart to deliver content, enhance student interactions, and structure relevant assignments.
